Extended CoverageExtended Coverage

Radio to radio communications isn’t always possible for the following reason:

  • Physical geography of the area i.e. lots of hills and trees to block the signal
  • Buildings or other obstructions causing the signal to be weakened
  • Sites are too far away from each other for the radio signal to reach

In this situation we would use additional equipment called a ‘repeater’ to extend tha range.  Repeaters are typically located in high places, such as at the top of tall buildings, which give a much greater view of the local area and lifts them above local obstructions.

The signal is received by one side of the repeater and then simultaneously re-transmitted by the other.  The result of this is that radio coverage can be extended well beyond that which is possible with a radio-to-radio solution.

The next stage from this is to link the various repeater sites together providing a truly
independent, private radio network with the coverage dictated by operational
requirements.
